David Dzhimshitashvili
jury: 2015, 2016, 2017

1993-2013 – the soloist of the musical ensemble “Urmuli Quintet,” which for 20 years has recorded six albums. Quintet “Urmuli” can be safely called virtuosos of Tbilisi. This quintet, which was established in 1993, immediately found its fans with a peculiar vision of the Georgian musical culture and masterly manner of execution. The roots of Georgian folk tunes reach the Middle Ages, but in the performance of the quintet this music sounds surprisingly modern and relevant. Quintet “Urmuli” is known all over the world: they have conducted more than 500 concerts in Germany, Austria, France, Switzerland, Spain, Canada, Poland, the UK and other countries. And each of these performances became an event in the cultural life of a country.
David Dzhimshitashvili plays the unique folk musical instruments handmade, which are spread in different parts of Georgia. So, salamuri, panduri, duduki – tools that represent the musical culture of eastern Georgia, and chonguri, chuniri, chiboni – west of the country. Virtuoso performs incredibly complex melody directly on 2-salamuri simultaneously (Georgian wind instrument, flute), which in this case are different parties.
